4-String to 5-String Conversion

Hey,

I have been having this idea in my head for a while now, and I wanted to see what the class thinks of it before I take the idea to my luthier. I have an old 4 string German Meisel upright, and I am thinking of converting it to a 5 string. It's had some extensive body damage repair, so I'm not overly worried about messing up a valuable instrument.

This 5 string would have a high C instead of a low B, so I don't think there would be a problem with excessive tension on the neck and body. I have seen some 5th string tuners in photos that add a fifth tuning machine on top of the scroll. After installing one of these, all we would have to is to get a new tailpiece that has five holes, a new 5 string nut, and then space them evenly on a new bridge. The string spacing would actually be just about right for me since I prefer a spacing similar to an EBG anyway.

Please let me know what you think of this idea, and what may be the pitfalls of doing such a conversion.

Thanks

I went to Bass pro shop and to my surprise they didn't have a single bass guitar.

Of course, a high C has MORE tension than a low B...
