In watching these videos (as well as observing others) I have noticed that in thumb position, it seems as if only the top two strings (D & G)are actually played. If the need to do something across the neck is needed (E & A), then a position shift happens. Is this a normal thing, or am I missing something. I would ask my teacher, but I have none. Thanks for your help.

It all depends on what you are playing and the sound you want. Usualy the higher string you play on the louder and brighter things get. It is all about what you want to sound.

Man, watching those videos inspired me to not only go back into the woodshed and learn the tunes I know in all 12 keys, but also to start recording myself and see how I actually sound and compare to Ray Brown. Man, I didn't sound anything like I thought I did...or Ray Brown for that matter.

But did you guys notice the huge difference in tone and groove between each student and Ray Brown after he (for lack of a better term) pwned them? For me, I used to take that tone for granted, now I realize how hard it is to get that tone and swing.

Check out the part where he sings the melody while walking on Cherokee and then he does the same thing with body and soul. Even while singing the melody his time is still amazing! Ray is king.

I love what he says about bass players needing to have their own time, not relying on the drummer. I know several drummers who need to practice this one, instead of stressing me out for their time!

I've been transcribing that solo of his on The Very Thought of You. Nice little workout, since I rarely use triple stops. It's really fun to play, too. Got about half of it transcribed.
